(An In-Depth Study of Hebrews)

Commentary

Got Milk?

Hebrews 5:11-14

Outline

The warning that the author of Hebrews has been repeating at times through the first five chapters is brought into sharp focus:

Issue:              Ignorant of even the basic principles of God  (verse 12)

Previous warnings:

2:1 Pay closer attention to the Word

3:1 Consider Jesus

3:8 Don’t harden your hearts

3:12 Take care, lest you have an evil heart of unbelief

4:1 Fear not entering the rest of God

4:11 Strive to enter the rest of God

4:14 Hold fast to your confession

Cause:                        Dull of hearing (verse 11)

Dull = Slow, sluggish (6:11-12)

Opposite of Dull is earnest, diligent

Hearing = believing (4:2)

Opposite of hearing is a rejection of the heart

Result:            Adults still living like babies (verse 13)

Milk is good (there’s nothing wrong with the milk)

Not growing by drinking milk is bad (a 20 year old baby has a disease)

Fix:                 Become mature with milk (verse 14)

Start drinking milk!

Be totally satisfied with the milk.

Receive the mind of Christ!

Life Application:

Discern between good and evil (Live a discerning lifestyle)

Obey Him

Hebrews 5:4-10

Outline

The main idea in the text comes in verse 9:

Jesus is the source of our eternal salvation.

The surrounding verses put forth Jesus’ credentials…

Honor (vs 4-5)

Appointed by God

Begotten Son

Order (vs 6, 10)

High Priest

Like Melchizedek  (not like Aaron)

Purity (Vs 7-9)

Tested / Proven

Learned Obedience

Made Perfect

LIFE APPLICATION:

Obey: The command “obey” doesn’t come with a list of do’s and don’ts. It comes with one imperative; believe!

Take Sin Serious: Like Jesus, pray that sin be put to death in this mortal body.

Have Confidence

Hebrews 4:14-5:3

Outline

There are two very important pictures of Jesus in the context of our verses;

Hebrews 4:14 through 5:3:

First picture is our Reigning King: (Not the main picture)

Throne of Grace –

The Kingdom is established on Grace. (verse 16b)

We all need help but we don’t deserve help.

We need to be pitied, have mercy and grace extended to us.

The main picture is our Sympathetic High Priest:

Jesus is compared to OT Israel Priesthood. (No modern day example is correct)

We need to know the OT in order to fully know our relationship with Jesus. (5:1-3)

As our High Priest: (4:15)

–          Tempted exactly as we are

–          Never gave in, never sinned, endured to the end

–          Understands weakness

Therefore…

Draw near…(vs16)

Jesus is sympathetic toward you

Hold fast…(vs14b)

Jesus is alive and in God’s presence, forevermore.

LIFE APPLICATION:

We need to strip ourselves of self-confidence:

Superman/Superwoman aren’t real

We need to stop drowning in leisure and sensual pleasures

Finding temporary escape

We need not be paralyzed

Sitting in dark depression

We have complete help now and forever

This is the whole point of the Old and New Testaments. God planned for a High Priest, a Savior, a Redeemer, a gracious Helper.

Resting On Promises

Hebrews 4:12-13

Outline

The Context of Chapters 2, 3 and 4 (so far):

The main idea is “There is a rest for the people of God” (4:9)

Enter by:

Trusting in the promises of God (4:3)

Trusting comes through the Word by faith (4:2)

Strive to enter that rest (4:11)

2:1 Pay much closer attention [to the Word]

3:1 Consider Jesus…the Apostle [the message, or Word]

3:12 Take care brothers…evil unbelieving heart [not believing the Word]

3:15 Today if you hear His voice [Word], don’t harden your hearts

For… (our focal verses 12 and 13) we are taught about the Word…

About the Word:

Living and Active

Sharper than a double edge sword

Dividing – Soul and spirit, joints and marrow

Discerning – thoughts and intentions of the heart

The point of verse 12 is:

The Word of God penetrates very deep into the whole person

Once deep inside it assesses the heart

The assessment is NOT Good vs. Bad

The assessment is Belief vs. Unbelief

Are you resting on the Promise of Sin or the Promise of God?

The point of verse 13 is:

All are exposed in God’s sight. God sees and understands all about all.

However:        Believers are “naked and unashamed”. (Genesis 2:25)

LIFE APPLICATION:

Everyone is a promise believer.

There must be a function to assess the promises on which we rest.

Spend time with God’s people allowing the Word to assess us.

Fear Unbelief and Live Fearless

Hebrews 4:1-11

Outline

(Verse 3:19)

We ended last week with the idea that unbelief is the great enemy of the Christian

(Verse 3:12, 13)

God has a design for the Christian life to destroy unbelief – Vigilance and Exhortation

Chapter 4:1-2 The promise of rest is still open…

Therefore, fear unbelief (only thing that can keep you from entering God’s rest)

For, everyone heard the Gospel, but only those with faith received the benefit.

Example : Joshua and Caleb

They heard the Gospel : Exodus 34:6-7

They believed God: Numbers 14:8-9

This example and the author of Hebrews presents; It is not Biblical to think that the Gospel life is a single act of faith with all else being idle and automatic.

God is restful but not idle.

Vs 4 – Creation

Creation is complete, on the seventh day God rested… (Genesis 2:2)

But God is at work in creation (John 5:17)

Basic Science – Matter cannot be created or destroyed,

But it is ever changing and moving.

Rest happens in the heart

Vs 7-8 – Not feet crossing a boundary, but a heart in harmony with God.

Paradox of the Christian Life

Vs 11 – Strive to Rest

Resting in God’s promises because we have faith, we believe; but living out our salvation in fear and trembling. (Philippians 2:12)

LIFE APPLICATION:

Receive great joy in the promises and live fearless of death/world by fearing unbelief and longing for God’s design for perseverance.

Commentary

Community Project

Hebrews 3:7-19

Outline

Verse 6…
We are His household IF,
               We hold fast in Hope.
Therefore, (picking up in verse 7)
Don’t be like those who didn’t enter the Promise land.
The point of verse 14 is:
If you are born again, you WILL endure faithful to the end.
Same as John states in 1 John 2:19; They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.
Same as Paul states in Philippians 1:6; And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
However, (Verse 12) Persevering involves vigilance
We must be “taking care” in our daily lives
That “taking care” happens in community and is God’s design (Verse 13)
God uses means by which we endure and verse 13 states that YOU are the means
of another’s perseverance.
How the Cross and Eternal Security come together:
               Luke 22:20  ----------  Jeremiah 32:40
LIFE APPLICATION:
To run from community is to run from God’s design to keep you.
Assurance of salvation is directly linked to necessity of community.
The most awesome life is to live in this beautiful design.

Don’t Be Like Those Guys

Hebrews 3:7-19

Outline

Reminder from verses 1-6:
Jesus is greater than Moses
               Jesus made Moses
               Jesus is God
Jesus is the Son and Heir
Verse 6…
We are His household IF,
               We hold fast in Hope.
Therefore, (picking up in verse 7)
Don’t be like those who didn’t enter the Promise land.
Psalm 95:8-11 (Used as a call to worship in the days of worship at the Temple)
               Verse 7 – 11:
                               These people:
a.       Heard the voice of God
b.      Was motivated to follow
c.       Saw God’s mighty works
d.      Had unbelieving hearts
e.       Didn’t make it in the end
LIFE APPLICATION:
Living daily in Christ is all important.
Without the Bible we drift away from God.
Do not treat the Grace of God with contempt.
Do not try to fix your behavior, just fall in love with Jesus!

Consider Jesus

(Christmas Edition)

Hebrews 3:1-6

Outline

Verse 1:

Consider Jesus, the faithful Apostle and High Priest

Let’s take a look at a favorite Christmas hymn: O, Come All Ye Faithful!

O come all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem.
        Come and behold him, born the King of angels;
Refrain:
O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him,
O come let us adore him, Christ the Lord.
O come all ye faithful: Hebrews 2:16-17 Jesus was first faithful and makes a way for us to join the faithful!
Joyful and triumphant: Hebrews 2:14-15 No longer slaves to death and sin.
O come ye: Hebrews 3:1 Consider this Jesus!
Behold him, born the King of angels: Hebrews 1:13 Jesus, reigning victorious King
And now the refrain: O come let us adore him
ADORE:
               Shepherds (Luke Chapter 2:20)
                               Smell like manure, not incense
               Magi (Matthew Chapter 2:10-11)
More like wicked wizards than kindly kings
ACKNOWLEDGE:
               Roman King (Matthew Chapter 2:3)
                               Wanted Jesus dead.
Jewish Religious Elite (Matthew Chapter 2:4)
                               Really wanted Jesus dead!
LIFE APPLICATION:
This Christmas, do you adore Jesus or simply acknowledge him? (Hebrews 2:1)

Teaching Outline Week 5

The Joy in Responsibility

(An In-Depth Study of Hebrews)

Commentary

Consider Jesus

Hebrews 3:1-6

Outline

Verse 1:

Speaking to the Holy Brothers

            Heavenly calling

            Sharing

Consider Jesus

Apostle – Sent One (Brings God to us)

High Priest – Mediator (Brings us to God)

Why consider Jesus?

Verses 2-5:

Both Jesus and Moses are faithful (Numbers 12:6)

                        But Jesus is Superior

                                    Moses = House

                                    Jesus = Builder

Verse 6:

Only one place for hope – Consider Jesus!

LIFE APPLICATION:

There is a river of hope flowing from God.

We don’t automatically stand in the river.

We need to talk to the architect of life about life.

Confidence comes from HOPE in JESUS alone!

Teaching Outline Week 4

The Joy in Responsibility

(An In-Depth Study of Hebrews)

Commentary

Perfect!

Hebrews 2:10-18

Outline

Verse 10:

Complex sentence – A/For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist,/ B/in bringing many sons to glory,/ C/ should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering./[1]

A[God the Father said “it’s fitting”]

B[God the Father’s children are being lead to glory]

C[He makes Jesus, the founder of the children’s salvation, perfect through suffering]

How was it fitting?

What kind of leader is Jesus?

How can the perfect be made perfect?

  1. How was it fitting –

Christ fully shared human nature, as v. 11a stated, vv. 11b–13 confirmed, and vv. 16–17 will reaffirm.

The purpose of Christ’s incarnation and death was to benefit (glorify, v. 10; sanctify, v. 11; liberate, v. 15; purify from sins, v. 17) his people.

  1. What kind of leader is Jesus –

Servant-Leader:

Sympathetic High Priest – Verse 17

Victorious Older Brother – Verses 14, 18

  1. How can the perfect be made perfect –

Means of perfecting:

Tested and proven

Already perfect (4:15; 7:26; 9:14)

Learning Obedience (5:8-9)

Result of perfecting:

Unity and Family (Connection between verse 10 and 11)

LIFE APPLICATIONS:

We are understood.

We rest in a perfect finished work.

We are loved and accepted in a perfect family.
